The Xylo Session<\/i>s Wood+ evenings cast a spotlight timber and post carbon natural building culture, highlighting projects, materials, research, and related initiatives, and building on previous Pioneering the Potential <\/i>events in 2021<\/b><\/a> and 2019<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Charley Brentnall<\/b><\/a> \u2013 <\/b>Founder of the original oak framers, <\/b>Carpenter Oak & Woodland<\/i><\/b><\/a>, <\/i><\/b>instrumental in the\u00a0British\u00a0timber frame renaissance. And more recently co-founder of <\/b>Xylotek<\/i><\/b><\/a>.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Sally Daniels<\/b><\/a> <\/b>\u2013 from <\/b>tangentfield<\/i><\/b><\/a>, <\/b>experimental community architects and live workshop specialist with the University of the West of England s Hands on Bristol<\/b>, MakingLewes<\/b> and Fourth Door\u2019s Roots Architecture at WOMAD<\/i><\/b><\/a> <\/i><\/b>for the last ten years.<\/p>\n

Dylan Walker<\/b> and Paddy Cox<\/b>, Built By Artizans<\/b><\/a>\u00a0–<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0traditional carpenters and timber framers from West Sussex, Walker and Cox will be talking about their latest project,\u00a0Watersmeet Barn<\/b><\/a>, Emsworth.<\/p>\n

Forty years on from the first glimmerings of the timber frame renaissance, the first Xylo evening highlights carpentry low, no and high tech, with Carpenter Oak & Woodland founder Charley Brentnall, Sally Daniels from tangent field who specialise in community live projects and workshops, including UWE\u2019s Hand on Bristol, and from West Sussex, traditional natural builders Dylan Walker and Paddy Cox from West Sussex\u2019s Built by Artizans, specialising in low tech permacultural ecobuilding pioneered by Ben Law. May\u2019s Xylo Sessions hones in on twenty first century digital timber and the fusion of high tech and handmade. Peter Scully<\/b> is technical director of the Bartlett Architecture school\u2019s B-made<\/b><\/a>: the Manufacturing and Design exchange high tech workshop and also responsible for the school\u2019s Stratford based HereEast Design for Manufacture<\/b><\/a> master\u2019s programme, whose students have been exploring the Bartlett\u2019s new forest base, Flimwell Park<\/b><\/a>, on East Sussex\u2019s border with Kent. Tom Bennett<\/b>, from Studio Bark<\/b><\/a> <\/b>will talk about the studios digital fabrication projects including U-Build<\/b><\/a>, their open-source modular self-build system. And as part of our regional South East focus, Karn Sandilands<\/b>, one of the founders of Portslade based design engineers and makers, Millimetre<\/a><\/b> will overview the design engineers many woody focused projects, including the ZDA Garden Pod<\/b><\/a>, nd the <\/b>Freya and Robin<\/b><\/a> bird hide shelters in the Kielder forest, Northumberland. Grand Huit<\/b><\/a> Architect<\/b>e\u2019s Ferme du Rail (Railway Farm) is an urban farm in the heart of Paris and is one of this year\u2019s EU architectural Mies Award<\/a> finalists. Grand Huit partner, Marine Kerboua<\/b> will tell the story of the permaculture based urban farm community project, which brings together housing and work for the local homeless community with a restaurant and greenhouse roof farm, and a building design reflecting its permacultural principles in its use of local chestnut, straw and earth building materials. As complement and contrast Steve Wallis<\/b> from industrial timber pioneers, dRMM<\/b><\/a> <\/b>will present their brand new cross laminated timber Workstack<\/b><\/a>, a five-storey workspace for trade, small scale manufacture and urban makers in Woolwich, South London.
